The Joint Commission takes notice

As the overriding authority in the creation and enforcement of healthcare standards, The Joint Commission is beginning to engage in the discussion of environmental sustainability in healthcare.  This is an important development which adds to the momentum of healthcare facilities adopting environmentally sustainable practices, a grassroots driven movement which is now hitting the radar of healthcare administrators.  The Joint Commission’s interest in environmental sustainability adds the rationale of regulatory compliance to the myriad of other reasons to adopt practices which do more to protect the environment:  cost-savings, reduced waste, reduced exposure to hazardous materials, energy and natural resource conservation, improved employee and patient safety and satisfaction, enhanced quality and performance improvement initiatives, and my personal favorite, the well-being of future generations on this beautiful planet.
