Below are some examples of the benefits of practices which reduce environmental impact:

In 2003, Boulder Community Hospital purchased $150,000 in closed sterilization containers.  Within two years, purchase of “blue wrap” (polypropolene / plastic #5) decreased from $210,000 to $60,000, and to date the hospital has enjoyed cost avoidance of over $1,000,000. (Kai Abelkis, Sustainability Coordinator, Boulder Community Hospital, Boulder, CO)

The ongoing use of a closed fluid management system at Boulder Community Hospital decreases the cost of regulated medical waste in the OR by an estimated 40%, and virtually eliminates staff exposure to blood and body fluids. (Julie Moyle, former Surgery Manager, Boulder Community Foothills Hospital)

Practice Greenhealth has helped advance the adoption of sustainable practices by compiling the results of its member hospitals.  A few examples include:

The University of Washington Hospitals in Seattle, WA diverted 5.8 tons of waste and saved the organization $496,123 in 2008 by reprocessing more than 100 single-use medical devices. Sheila Job-Lockwood, Compliance Outreach Coordinator, Environmental Health & Safety, University of Washington Medicine, Seattle WA)

By properly segregating medical wastes into clean / recycling streams, Inova Fairfax Hospital,  decreased its regulated medical waste by 18.6% and saved over $15,000 in a 6-month period. (Seema Wadhwa LEED AP, Sustainability Engineer, Inova Health System/Sustainability Director, Urban Ltd, Fairfax VA)

The implemenation of a resuable sharps container system saved Illinois Mason Hospital $13,000 in 2010, and reduced its medical waste by 10 tons. (Steve Verzi, Safety Coordinator, Advocate Illinois Mason Hospital, Chicago, IL)

Adjusting HVAC settings (so that air exchange settings occurred only when ORs were occupied) in just two ORs at Providence St. Peter Hospital saved over $4,000/yr. (Keith Edgerton, Sustainability Coordinator, St. Peter Hospital and Providence Southwest Washington Service Area)

Establishing baseline metrics is an important first step in providing ongoing feedback to the organization in its sustainability efforts, and an important component of the strategic development plan.  1×1 Consulting works with clients to create a sustainability dashboard.  For more information, click here.
